Latest Tasting Observations
Recently we’ve been having fun tasting all our vintages, going right back to our first test batch in 2007. Our current releases—The Prince 2016 Shiraz and The Sultan 2015 Shiraz—are drinking beautifully right now. They show an impressive combination of luscious fruit and soft finish, and we are confident they’ll continue to improve and provide great drinking for up to 20 years.
You may well ask “what makes the Talbots so confident about that?” A couple of things really: the excellent structure of the wines combined with the power and depth of their fruit give a big clue. More importantly our recent tastings revealed a steady trajectory of improvement of our wines over time. In particular our 2007 trial batch Shiraz stunned us with how marvellous our wines can become after a few years of cellaring.
The 12 year old 2007 Shiraz was unbelievably good, having evolved rich, gorgeous jammy fruit flavours—and the passing of the years has only added to its velvety smoothness. We see all our Shiraz having the potential to evolve in the same way—and our current vintages are no exception.

Vineyard Update
We are pleased to report that after a very dry start to the year we’ve had decent rainfall across May, June and July, which is serving to fully replenish soil moisture in the vineyard. This bodes well for the springtime vine growth cycle. Although it has been too cold for the cover crop to achieve much growth yet, it is nevertheless off to a very good start, and is on track to deliver great results. This will set us up well for the addition of organic matter to the mid row soil, and for the long-term health of the vineyard. It’s all about ensuring the best conditions to produce more wonderful fruit for future vintages of Talbots Block Shiraz.
Let’s drink to that…Cheers!
